Update April 12, 2019
In response to the weather forecast, USQ is making changes to the schedule on both Saturday and Sunday. Read more here. The game times below have been updated to reflect these changes.
Update April 8, 2019
Due to unforeseen circumstances, University of Northern Colorado has dropped from this event. For the Swiss format, if a game is not taking place, rather than treating it as a forfeit it will be treated as a bye. In this event, the team facing the bye will be awarded a 40*-0 win for the tiebreakers. For the second round, the bye would be randomly paired against a 0-1 team. For the third round, the bye would be randomly paired against a 0-2 team, and so forth. NYU will receive the bye for the first round.
The field for US Quidditch Cup 12 will include 84 total collegiate and community teams. 60 teams will compete in the Collegiate Championship in a Swiss-style tournament, with 2 flights of 16 teams and 2 flight of 14 teams. 24 teams will compete in the Community Championship in a pool play format tournament with 4 pools of 6 teams.
The officials and volunteer schedule will be shared by Monday, April 8. Teams will know in advance when they are officiating for all of Saturday. This schedule will include pitch assignments for the first four rounds of play. Further rounds of play beyond the first four on Saturday will be assigned pitches once the collegiate matchups are determined. To be notified when matchup information is available during the event, sign up for the mass text messaging list here.
Information in this article:
The Collegiate Championship will be a Swiss-style tournament. Teams will compete in four (4) flights, playing three (3) games each on Saturday and one (1) game each on Sunday. Two (2) flights will have sixteen (16) teams, and two (2) flights will have fourteen (14) teams. Teams will only compete against other teams in the same flight.
In a Swiss-style tournament, teams of equal record are paired against each other in each round. For example, after each team has played one game, each team with a 1-0 record will compete against another team with a 1-0 record, and each team with a 0-1 record will compete against another team with a 0-1 record. After each team has played two games, each 2-0 team will play another 2-0 team, each 1-1 team will play another 1-1 team, and each 0-2 team will play another 0-2 team, etc. Following the first round, the matchups for each round will be randomly drawn from the pool of teams with the same record.
In the pools of 14 teams, there will be rounds with an uneven number of teams with each record. In these cases, the determination of which team will compete against a team of a different record will be based on random selection. For example, after the first round of play, there will be seven teams that are 1-0 and seven teams that are 0-1. In the second round, six of the 1-0 teams will compete against each other, and one of the 1-0 teams will be randomly paired with a randomly selected 0-1 teams. The other six 0-1 teams will then compete against each other.
The first match of the day has been determined in advance, based on USQ standings. Higher ranked teams are initially matched against lower ranked teams within the same flight. For example, in a flight of 16, the 1st ranked team within a flight will play the 16th ranked team in their flight, and the 2nd ranked team within the flight will play the 15th ranked team. If these pairings would result in a team facing a team from the same region, then the matchups have been changed within a pair of teams. These regional adjustment pairings are teams seeded 1st and 2nd, 3rd and 4th, 5th and 6th, and so on.
On Sunday, the collegiate bracket has been altered from a 44-team bracket to a 32-team bracket. All teams with a 4-0 record and all teams with a 3-1 record will move on to the bracket. Teams that have a 2-2 record may move on to the bracket, but with the reduced bracket size, not all 2-2 teams will move on to the bracket. Teams who complete Swiss play with a 2-2 record will be compared against the other teams in their flight with a 2-2 record based on the collegiate tiebreakers for this tournament, as listed below, to fill the remaining spots in the 32-team bracket.
The initial format called for four (4) flights of sixteen (16) teams. However, with only 60 competing teams, the USQ gameplay department reviewed the options of either four flights of fifteen teams or two of fourteen and two of sixteen. With four flights of 16, there would be sixteen teams that only play three games on Saturday instead of four games. By switching to the other flight layout, it eliminates these byes and ensures that all teams will be scheduled for four games on Saturday. Additionally, with the requirement for a team to have 2 wins to move onto the bracket, no team will be able to qualify for the bracket with a 1-3 record, even if they finish in the top 11 teams in a flight of fourteen.
Due to the Swiss format, we are adjusting the tiebreakers that will be used onsite for the collegiate division. Teams with the same win record will first be compared based on Strength of Victory, followed by Strength of Schedule, then Record Before Snitch Catch, and the remainder of the normal tiebreakers from that point (Quaffle Points Against, Quaffle Points For, Snitch Catch Percentage, and coin flip).
Strength of Victory will be calculated by the average win percentage of the opponents that a team beat. Strength of Schedule will be calculated by the average win percentages of all opponents a team faces. When calculating the win percentage of your opponents, games against your team are removed from the calculation.
Explanations of the other tiebreakers can be found here.
US Quidditch Cup 12 will feature 60 teams in the collegiate division. The division originally was slated to include 64 teams, but due to a number of extenuating circumstances for several different teams, we were not able to allocate all the bids.
The full list of attending teams is available here.
The original ranked list of teams was divided into fifteen pots by seed (with the four top ranked teams in the first pot, the next top four teams in the second pot, and so on), and each flight had one team randomly drawn from each pot. The rankings were based on the USQ standings, per the rankings algorithm described here. Protections were put in place to limit the number of teams from each region in each flight.
Flights B and D have 14 teams, while flights A and C have 16 teams. As such, no team was drawn from pot 8 for either flight B or flight D. Flight A and flight C each drew 2 teams from pot 8.

Community teams will compete in pool play first, then moving into a bracket. Teams were placed into four (4) pools of six (6) based on the USQ standings. The 24 teams were put into a ranked list based on USQ standings, and then divided into six pots by seed. Each pool has one team randomly drawn from each pot.
Teams will compete in five (5) pool play games, with three (3) played on Saturday, and two (2) pool play games played on Sunday.
On Sunday, teams will be seeded into a 12-team single elimination bracket based on their performance in pool play. The top 3 teams from each pool will advance, with the winner of each pool receiving a bye to the quarterfinals. The bracket position of each team that advances will be pre-determined based on the team’s pool and placement within their pool. Each pool will be assigned a letter for the bracket (ex. W, X, Y, or Z) based on the top seed in their bracket. Of the four top seeds after pool play, the 1st overall seed will be assigned W1, and the second place team from their pool will be assigned W2, and so on. See the image below for the general format of the community bracket.
The community division will use the standard USQ tiebreakers.
The original ranked list of teams was divided into six pots by seed, and each flight had one team randomly drawn from each pot.
