COLLEGIATE GAMEPLAY FORMAT
GENERAL FORMAT
On Saturday, college teams will compete in a pool play format, then on Sunday will move into a two division bracket (based on Saturday results). To generate the groupings for pool play, teams were placed into eight (8) pools of four (4) and one additional pod of six (6) based on the USQ standings. The 39 teams were put into a ranked list based on USQ standings, and then divided into seven pots by seed. The pod of seven has one team randomly drawn from each pot. Then, the remaining 32 teams were divided into four pots by seed. One team from each pot was drawn into each of the eight pools of four.
Following teams being drawn, James Madison University has dropped from nationals. In light of this drop, Arizona State University will move to be the Pot 4 team in Pool F. The previous seven team pod will now become a six team pod. Their format will be crossplay between two sub pods. Sub Pod I1 will be Texas Quidditch (TXQ), Florida State University (FSU), and Quidditch Club of Pittsburgh (PITT). Sub Pod I2 will be Harvard Horntails (HARV), WVU Summit (WVU), and University of Northern Colorado (NOCO). The teams in Sub Pod I1 and Sub Pod I2 will play the teams in the opposing sub pod for their 3 Saturday games.
All teams will compete in three (3) pool play games, all played on Saturday. Teams in the four team pools will play each of the other teams in their own pool once. Within the remaining six team pod, each team has been assigned three opponents. These opponents were balanced based on pot to create an equal strength of schedule for all teams’ game sets.
On Sunday, teams will be seeded into one of two brackets based on their performance in pool play. Teams with at least two pool play wins will compete in a single-elimination championship bracket to determine the Collegiate Champion. Teams who do not meet the two win threshold will compete in a separate single-elimination bracket to determine a Collegiate Division Two champion. If there are either
-not at least eight teams to fill the division two bracket, or
-fewer than six of those teams with at least one pool win,
the division two bracket will not take place and instead remaining teams will have the option of playing additional scheduled games.
The collegiate division will use the standard USQ tiebreakers.
POTS AND POOL DRAW PROCESS
The original ranked list of teams was divided into seven pots by seed, and one team was randomly drawn from each pot to create the pod of seven teams. The rankings were based on the USQ standings, per the rankings algorithm described here. Protections were put in place to limit the number of teams from one region in this pod.
Next, the remaining 32 teams were redivided into four pots (using the same rankings), and each pool had one team randomly drawn from each pot. Protections were again put in place to limit the number of teams from one region in each pool.

CLUB GAMEPLAY FORMAT
GENERAL FORMAT
On Saturday, club teams will compete in pool play, then on Sunday move into a two division bracket. Teams were placed into three (3) pools of five (5) and four (4) pools of four (4) based on the USQ standings. The 31 teams were put into a ranked list based on USQ standings, and then divided into nine pots by seed. Each of the odd numbered pots had three teams, and each of the even numbered pots had four teams. One team from each odd numbered pot was drawn into each of the three pools of five, and one team from each of the even numbered pots was drawn into each of the four pools of four.
All club teams will play four pool games on Saturday. Teams in the pools of five will play a game against each other member of their own pool. Teams in the pool of four will play a game against each other member of their own pool, as well as one additional game against the team of the same pot from their neighboring pool.
On Sunday, teams will be seeded into one of two brackets based on their performance in pool play. All teams who win at least two pool games will be seeded into a variable sized single-elimination bracket to determine the Club Champion. Up to twelve teams who do not meet the two win threshold will compete in a separate single-elimination bracket to determine a Club Division Two champion. If there are either:
- not at least eight teams to fill the division two bracket, or
- fewer than six of those teams with at least one pool win,
The division two bracket will not take place and instead remaining teams will have the option of playing additional scheduled games.
The club division will use the standard USQ tiebreakers.

Recap Article
38 collegiate teams and 31 club teams competed this weekend in Salt Lake City, Utah at the Salt Lake Regional Athletic Complex on April 23-24, 2022. Teams in both divisions participated in a pool play format on day one. On day two, teams with at least two pool play wins went to a single elimination championship bracket. Teams with less than two wins went to a division 2 single elimination bracket.
On the collegiate side, Texas Quidditch (TXQ) took gold and is now tied with Middlebury College for the most national titles. This is the second collegiate division championship win for TXQ after the collegiate-club split in 2017. They beat Creighton Quidditch, the first team from the midwest region to reach a national championship final, for the win.
The club division had a repeat of the last US Quidditch Cup club final in 2019, with Texas Cavalry defending their title against Texas Hill Country Heat. This time, Texas Hill Country Heat pulled ahead, beating Cavalry 150-130 in a matchup for the history books. This marks Heat’s second appearance in a club division final and first time taking the gold.
Alongside the USQ Cup bracket for the championship, a division 2 bracket was held for both divisions. SHSU Quidditch won the D2 collegiate bracket, and the Bay Area Breakers won the D2 club bracket.
